Black Sea Rotary Club International Competition of Wheelchair Basketball

Five teams from four countries – Belarus, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine gathered together in Istanbul for an international wheelchair basketball competition organized by the International Rotary and the International Wheelchair Basketball Association, Europe (IWBF, Europe). Romania had formed a national team for the first time comprising 7 players from three of the basketball teams currently playing in Romania, namely Arad Temerarii Club, Lamont Centre Cluj and AJTS Constanta. The players from Arad were Vrabea Gelu; Ciobaru Ion; Strachinaru Florin; Dronca Gabriel; Palea Madelina (Coach). The player from Constanta was Mititelul Daniel The players from Cluj were Dorel Muresan and Alex Diaconu and their trainer John McDaniels.
The teams were accommodated in the Adela Hotel ten minutes from the Ahmad Sports Hall. Turkey Rotaract and Rotary members together with the officials from the Turkish Wheelchair Basketball Federation and Ron Coppenrath, Secretary-General of the IWBF, Europe worked together to offer a very well organized tournament. The Romanian national team won third place in this tournament, an excellent result for their first appearance together.
Next year the Black Sea Rotary Club International Competition of Wheelchair Basketball has been chosen to be held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. “This is a great honour for us”, said the President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) , Sally Wood-Lamont “and I am sure we can show all countries that we can organise a very good tournament here in Romania. It will be the first official international wheelchair basketball competition to be held under the auspices of the NPC Romania”.
